1. Less is more
Did you know that Facebook’s optimal character count is 40? Other channels’ algorithms are similar. Although there’s a time and place for longer form stories, most often, a good rule of thumb is to say less with fewer words. ONE focus per post is best.
2. First sentence = most crucial sentence
You only have about two seconds to get your social audience’s attention so they stop mid-scroll. If your first sentence doesn’t stand out, your post is toast.
3. Get to the point
Every bit of social media copy should have an intention. The point of the post should be clear to your audience. Bold, emphasize, or lead with it. Don’t ever make your audience guess what you’re trying to say.
4. Use CTAs - ALWAYS
Calls-to-action (CTAs) make a direct ask of your audience. Whether it’s to click, comment or share, donate, purchase, etc. Without clear, enticing CTAs, you’ve taken away their chance to deepen their connection to your organization.
5. It’s not about you
We don’t mean to be harsh, but your marketing audience doesn’t care to read the 10-paragraph biography of your brand’s founder or celebrate your team member’s birthday. They care about how your product or service can improve their lives. Write your copy from the POV of your audience. Who are they? What do they want? How can you help them?
6. Don’t rely on ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a fantastic tool, and we often use it for project ideation. But social media copy? Never. Why? Frequently, it produces flowery, dramatic, non-conversational language. Additionally, if you can’t take the time to write your own social media copy, why should your audience take the time to read it?
7. Avoid cryptic and cheesy language
Something we see WAY too often is that brands being mysterious or overly cheesy in their copy. Sorry to say, but your audience hates it. We usually say, “Stand out by fitting in,” when it comes to social media. That means writing in the same way you’d speak to your friend or colleague.
8. Keep it digestible
Have you ever looked at a bunch of text, gotten overwhelmed, and chose not to finish reading? We have. To avoid this on social, make sure your copy is easy on the eyes and digestible. Use bullet points, emojis, and paragraph spacing when needed.
9. PROOOOOOOOOF
Every Social Media Manager has had a post go up and ONLY THEN noticed a typo. It makes us cringe every time. Luckily, you can edit posts on most channels even after they’re posted—but you can’t change the opinions of everyone who’s already seen it.
